How to reverse PDF page order

The backwards-scan fix
This is nearly always a scanner problem. Feed a document face-down into a sheet-fed scanner and you get a good PDF in the wrong order. Rescanning a 50-page stack takes ten minutes. Flipping the file takes one click. It also sorts out anything assembled newest-first, like appended logs that ought to read forwards.

When reversing isn't the fix
There is a second, similar-looking scanner failure that reversing will not repair, so tell them apart before you save. It happens when you scan a double-sided document on a scanner that only captures one side at a time. You run the whole stack through face-up to get the fronts, flip the stack over, run it through again to get the backs, and end up with a file holding pages 1, 3, 5, 7 … followed by 8, 6, 4, 2.
Every page is present and every page is the right way up, but they need interleaving rather than flipping: the first page of the second half belongs after the last page of the first half, and so on inwards. What reversing does to the file
Reordering pages rearranges the document's page tree, the index that says which page comes where, and leaves the pages themselves untouched. Nothing is re-rendered or re-compressed, so text stays selectable, scans keep exactly the quality they had, and the file size barely moves. It is a lossless operation, and running it twice returns you to where you started.
One thing to check afterwards on a document that has them: bookmarks and internal cross-references still point at the pages they always did, which is correct behaviour but may not be what you want in a file whose reading order has just been inverted. Scans, which are where reversal is nearly always needed, have neither, so this rarely comes up.
